ITV unveiled a closely guarded secret at last nights 'TV Quick' gala awards. The stunned audience watched in amazement as ITV executive Brian Malharem revealed the truth behind it's long standing soap opera 'Coronation Street'.

Malherem started by announcing, 'should I bring out the real Ken Barlow?'. The crowd laughed along initially, but as actor William Roache arrived on stage a visual presentation, the like of which has not been seen before, began on a large screen behind Malharem and Barlow.

A birth certificate flashed upon the screen, followed by gasps from the audience. The certificate read 'Ken Barlow, born Weatherfield, son of council farmer.'

'Yes', Barlow screamed, 'I am not William Roache, I am ken Barlow! I pretend not to be Ken when I'm at awards like this but now the truth must come out.'

Malherem introduced, one by one, Coronation Street's cast of characters. For each individual's arrival, a birth certificate emblazoned the screen proving undeniable proof that they were all in fact just real people caught up in an apparent reality TV series.

The oldest reality TV series in history.

'We are proud of what we have achieved', Malherem continued, 'the longest running look into a very real world, that has had the world gripped since 1953'.

'We didn't know we were being filmed until 1987', said Kevin Webster, 'there's just no way we'd have found out if Curly Watts hadn't have tried to scale the massive security fences that surround Weatherfield.'

The press had a field day after the show and on the case of three very different looking 'Tracey Barlow's' that have appeared in the show, Deirdre retorted 'I have three daughters, they are all called Tracey, it's as simple as that.'

Case closed then Deirdre.
